The history of
dueling pianos

Dueling pianos started about 50 years ago in New Orleans at Pat O’Brien’s bar on Bourbon Street.

Mercedes and Connie Kay began this cult phenomenon by incorporating a pair of upright pianos positioned perpendicular to each other. Dueling pianos was originally designed to be classical by nature. But before long, rock-n-roll took the practice in a different direction. Using rock-n-roll made the show so much more fun that audience members couldn't help but to begin singing along. It was then when the interactive concept was born.

Original interactive styles of choice included Dixieland, 40's and 50's music.

Trivia fact: Pat O'Brien's is also the home of the original "Hurricane" cocktail. It obtained it's name because the glass it was served in looked much like a hurricane lamp.

Pat O'Brien's restaurant pub is located on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. It is also the home of dueling pianos.
